Thai Shock

I remember how naive I was before I went to Thailand. Firstly, I knew nothing then of Southeast Asia and Thai cuisine had not yet caught on in Japan or the States. I was an exchange student protected in Japan, ready for a real adventure. The ultimate goal was the island of Koh Samui (which bore the slogan it ain't what it used to be but it's still worth it). That slogan probably lasted thirty years before the last hopeful backpacker had to admit it's now Club Med beach to beach.

Still, I did many things on that island; I caught a beautiful and big bright green tropical fish that we had for dinner. I discovered the durian Mecca of Southeast Asia in the village of Surat Mai, I chased down and with a rock killed a chicken that we made into curry, and I went to the most fantastic seafood restaurant of my life there.

But this anecdote is not about Koh Samui and the famous night boat to Sura Thani. It's more about Bangkok. You see, I distinctly remember us as a bunch of ignorant college kids in Hong Kong the night before we were to depart to Bangkok. We were eating in an outdoor market/restaurant and everything- the glasses, the chopsticks, the plates, were, well, just plain filthy and unsanitary. As was the concrete beneath our feet. Everything stunk too.

One of friends knowingly remarked, Just wait until we get to Thailand. You ain't seen nothing yet! It was very anti-climatic of him to say that though. Bangkok (twenty years ago, mind you) was indeed poor, polluted, and crowded, it was also very clean, colorful, and the people were energetic and happy. Buddhas were at every corner, and everyone was grinning. I fell in love with a world that deep in my subconscious I had been longing for. The only problem was that it was February and it was HOT! I remember as I was nearly about to pass out at a temple a middle aged macho guy coming up to me and proudly saying, My country is hot! That voice still echoes in my mind as surely as he has grown old.

Bangkok. The majority of reviews for the Lebua at State Tower consistently state that this is one of the better quality hotels in Bangkok, with great facilities and good value for money. Standing at 59 stories high, the views are simply amazing and the rooftop bar is a special feature. This hotel is always worth a look.

Four Helpful Thailand Travel Tips

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Thailand still evokes an exotic image in the minds of most travellers. After you have organised your travel insurance, you can set about the exciting task of planning your journey. And there is plenty to plan for. Despite the eruptions of the past few months, the only political trouble occurred in the main streets of the capital, Bangkok. Travellers who have returned from their Thailand holidays have commented that outside the capital, life went on as normal and tourists were able to enjoy the luxury and relaxation they were looking for.

Happily, many of the more exciting parts of Thailand are outside the capital anyway, so even if you feel a little unsafe you can rest assured that the majority of the country is stable, happy, and ready to accept tourists from anywhere!

With so many places to choose from however, it is often difficult to know which destinations to include on your itinerary. So, with that in mind, let's take a look at four top tips to help you plan your trip.

The best time to visit Thailand is any time except the rainy season from July to October. The monsoonal season which dominates the weather over that period doesn't mean it is impossible to visit Thailand at that time it just means that you will have to get used to short bursts of heavy rain at any time of the day. Apart from that, you will find the weather in Thailand is good although it can be extremely hot in summer. Most tourists tend to travel between November and February when it is at its coolest.
Customs regulations are very strict in Thailand and any breaches are treated harshly. Make sure you check with your travel agent to make sure you're not carrying too many cigarettes, wine or spirits. When it comes to drugs, Thailand is notoriously harsh and you will no doubt be aware of the death penalties which have been handed down to anyone involved in the narcotics trade.
When you travel to any new country it is always exciting to explore the culture and to see how other people go about their daily lives. Although this is welcomed in Thailand, make sure you are respectful of some of their closely held beliefs. The royal family is held in very high esteem by all Thais, so you should never criticise the monarchy. Images of the Buddha are also treated as sacred no matter where they are situated in or how big they are. Buddhist monks are also treated with great respect and should not be touched under any circumstances. Also, don't forget to take off your shoes when visiting someone's home or a temple.
One of the quirky things you should be aware of is the Thai treatment of the head and feet. The head is sacrosanct in Thai culture so you should avoid patting anyone on the head, including children. As opposed to this never use your feet to point at anything and never allow the palms of your feet to point towards an image of the Buddha.

If you bear these tips in mind you will enjoy your hollow even more, and once again that figure to organise your holiday insurance well in advance.

Cambodia - Strengths and Weaknesses

Cambodia hasn't been the hotbed of activity like its neighbors have for almost a half-millennium. Realizing its weakness and working to become a bigger tourist destination to help pull its citizens out of poverty, the country has taken great strides in improving its cities and amenities. Since, the biggest industries that the Cambodian economy relies on are construction, tourism, investment, and commodity trade. Cambodia continues to improve on its safety and international relations.

Cambodia is political member of such organizations as the United Nations and the World Bank. It also continues to improve the political side of their government by building diplomatic relations with many countries, hosting 20 embassies across the country. There are still border disputes that arise between the country and its neighbors on occasion. The biggest violence seems to erupt between the border of Thailand and Cambodia where as recently as April, 2009, there was an uprising about where the physical border lies. Both countries mobilized their militaries and 2 Thai soldiers fell as a result of the incident.

One of the Cambodia's strengths has been the economic growth that's rapidly on the rise. But the overall economic situation is still low when compared to its neighbors in other parts of Southeast Asia. This has also had the "trickle down" effect, allowing the average per capita wage to increase as well. Cambodia still has a great deal of its population in poverty, though. One of the big positive economic contributors, outside of the increased tourism, has been the reintroduction of more than 750 different types of rice courtesy of the International Rice Research Institute out of the Philippines. Another weakness affecting the economic growth and situation in Cambodia is the lack of education that many of the older generations possess. While education and fluency in reading and writing are rapidly increasing among its youth, the older citizens are still behind the times.

One of Cambodia's strengths is the great culture due to its mix of modern globalization and various religions. A major strength is what the Cambodian Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts has done for the promotion and development of Cambodian culture. Another thing plaguing Cambodia is the effects of Civil War on its people. The median age is just 20.1 and UNICEF has identified the country as the third most land mined in the country. Cambodia is on the rise but it will take some time to help fully recover from its current state.

Teachers' Day in Thailand

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Since 1957, Thailand has been celebrating the Teachers' Day to honor educators and facilitators of learning across the country. Every year on January 16, Teachers' Day is celebrated across Thailand.

In 1956, the Prime Minister of Thailand, Field Marshal P. Pibulsongkram, was also the Honorary Chairman of Board of Directors of the Teachers' Council. He addressed the teachers throughout the country, he said that the teachers play a dominant role in molding a student's life and therefore, students should love and respect their teachers. And he also suggested that the teachers should have a day of their own and it should be used as an opportunity by the students to pay respect and homage to their teachers.

It was Field Marshal P. Pibulsongkram who started the concept of Teachers' Day in Thailand. He felt that the Thai people celebrated many auspicious days to pay tribute to their living and dead relatives. However, there was no day set aside for teachers who were paid the same respect as parents.

After this speech, many teachers agreed with what Field Marshal P. Pibulsongkram had to say. They felt that a day should be set aside when they are remembered and honored for their role in building and making wise and responsible citizens. Thus, the same year, that is 1956, the Teachers' Council unanimously agreed to set up Teachers' Day and the cabinet passed a resolution announcing January 16 as Teachers' Day. The first Teachers' Day in Thailand was celebrated in 1957 and it was declared as a national holiday in Thailand. On this day students perform religious activities and wish happiness to their teachers for the rest of the year.

As per Buddhist traditions, teachers are as important as parents, if not more. Teachers' Day is used as an opportunity to reinforce this and show gratitude to teachers for their work and teachings.

Tips On Booking Your Hotel Room In Thailand

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Whether you are traveling to Thailand or any other destination in the world, finding a suitable hotel room and paying the correct price for it is not as simple as we would like it to be. However, with careful research and tips on booking your hotel room in Thailand, you should be able to come up with something that is appropriate.

The first step in booking your hotel room in Thailand is to do careful search on any of the major search engines. Advancements in the Internet have made it possible for us to conduct this sort of search. The results will show you thousands of hotel booking sites. However, you should be looking for a website that belongs to the hotel.

When it comes to checking out a hotel, the best source to find out more information about the hotel and price is travel guides. Many people use travel guides to write reviews on hotels after their vacation and you can use these reviews as an aid in helping you find the perfect hotel for your stay in Thailand.

However, there are people who prefer to browse websites of each and every hotel before making up their mind. The best part about a hotel's website is that you can book your room online using the reservation form provided on the site. However, before doing this, make sure you compare rates of similar hotels in the same area before confirming your reservation. The good part about checking out hotel websites is that you will get the lowest possible room rate which travel agents may not be able to match.

Want a Deserted Island Vacation? Try These Areas

Image : http://www.flickr.com

For some reason, fictional stories always seem to portray being marooned on a deserted island as a bad thing. Books like Lord of the Flies, movies like Cast Away, and TV shows like Lost portray it as a terrifying ordeal that one is lucky to survive. But if you ask me, aside from the obvious food and shelter issues, being cast away on some tropical deserted island sounds great. At least if you get dropped off on the kind of island portrayed in these stories, you have access to a beach, good fishing, trees to build a shelter, and regular rain for drinking water. Sure, I'd probably want to get off the island at some point, but the rescuers can take their time.

So-called "deserted island vacations" are a growing adventure travel trend among people with enough cash to spend. There are obvious difficulties to this type of vacation, of course; most importantly, it's extremely difficult to find islands that are 1) uninhabited, 2) picturesque, 3) safe, and 4) open to tourists. However, as the deserted island vacation trend grows, it's likely that governments and private individuals who own islands will begin taking advantage of this potentially lucrative business.

So what are the areas of the world most likely to have the right kinds of conditions for deserted island vacations?

The Caribbean: The Caribbean region has over 7,000 islands, cays, above-water reefs, and islets, and that's just the number that has been counted. To the northwest, there are the Greater Antilles, comprised of larger islands like Cuba, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, and Jamaica, all of which are surrounded by numerous smaller islands right in the middle of some of the most beautiful seas in the world.

And even more promising, to the southeast are the Lesser Antilles, comprised of hundreds of little island territories, including the Virgin Islands, Trinidad, Tobago, Grenada, Saint Vincent, and many others that most of us have never even heard of. And then there are also the Bahamas, the Florida Keys, and many more stray islands out in the middle of the sea.

South Pacific: As every deserted island enthusiast knows, the South Pacific region is the mother lode. When you take into account the Melanesian, Micronesian, and Polynesian island chains, add in the islands of Oceania, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, and all the other countries in the region, you get an uncountable number of islands that probably number somewhere around 100,000. If you weren't paying attention, you might not have realized that there were this many islands in the whole world, let alone in one region.

Temple Boys Of Thailand

Image : http://www.flickr.com

In the country-side of Thailand one will find many boys working in the temples as temple boys. These boys help monks in their alms collecting as they go from village to village. A temple has the responsibility of the monks alms bowl and food career. The temple boy accompanies the monk when they are their daily rounds of alms collection.

If a temple has many monks and novices, then the alms collection is normally divided into several routes. On certain routes only one temple boys assists the monks while on others there can be two or more. This usually depends on the quantity and amount of food offered by lay people.

On return to the temple, temple boys prepares food for the monks and novices. As a religious rule, monks are not allowed to eat food unless it is presented by a lay person. This excludes water and liquids. After the monks finish eating, temple boys will keep some food the monks for their second meal which must take place before midday. However, if some monks for the Buddhist precepts strictly, they will eat only one meal a day. The leftovers are eaten by the temple boys as it is considered a sin for lay people to eat before monks and novices. After midday, the only food consumed by monks and novices is liquid like water or pasteurized milk.

A temple boy undertakes work of a housemaid in a temple. The only difference is that the temple boy is not paid for the work. A temple boy gets free food, accommodation and merit in exchange for work. Mostly poor farmer families send their boys to the temple to live temple boys. It is their way of ensuring that their sons gets free food and accommodation. However, there have been cases when boys from affluent families live in temple compounds.

Life of temple boy in a village can be difficult when the farmers in the village are poor. As a result the food offered to monks would be extremely limited and it is quite common for little food to be left over for the temple boys after monks and novices finish eating.

Learning Thai Massage in Koh Samui

Marloas is nineteen years old and she comes from Rotterdam in Holland. She is in gap year from school and has taken the time to travel in Asia. She has been on the road for four months and as the trip winds to a close she has come to the Health Oasis Resort in Koh Samui to learn Thai massage.

“This is one of the best things I did on my trip,’ she enthuses. “While I was traveling I had massages. It felt so nice that I decided I would like to learn how to do it!”

“It’s just for fun. I have learned it for myself and to help my friends and family.”

No, she does not want to become a massage therapist. Her goal is to train as a medical doctor, and this preparation in massage could well help her in her aspiration to study western medicine.

Her twenty-hour course stretched over a leisurely five and a half days. So she has plenty of time for rest and relaxation in the swimming pool and on the beach beside. She laughs when she says, “I enjoyed the rest!”

“I also really liked the Course with Thai instructor Nan.”

Nan, by the way started her studies at the prestigious Wat Pho in Bangkok which serves as the premier massage teaching facility in Thailand.

“She really gets the students to practice a lot. She’s very kind and supportive, too and that helped a whole lot!” Says the young Dutch student.

“She taught me to apply my whole body in making the massage strokes.”

Marloas explains she was always afraid that her hands would become tired whilst massaging, but she was surprised to find that instead she felt energised.

“I now know the pressure points and understand how to make people relax.”

The course that Marloas attended is not designed to turn out professional therapists. It is certificated but is designed for self-development and general interest. For those eager to learn Thai massage for professional use, Health Oasis Resort offers a more intensive fifty hour period of instruction, and this too comes with a certificate.

Massage is one of several subjects that visitors can learn at the Bang Po beach side resort. Other topics include Thai Cookery, Reiki, Meditation and EFT or Emotional Freedom Technique. The Thai cooking is interesting because it is geared very much to the visitor to the Kingdom. Many people have enjoyed eating Thai food in restaurants worldwide and on coming to Thailand have taken the experience to another dimension. What Health Oasis encourages is to teach visitors how to cook their favourite dishes. Naturally this requires a little notice because the instructors have to go to the market and buy the freshest ingredients possible so the ‘trainee chef’ can prepare that favourite meal. Once you have cooked it, all you then have is the pleasure of sitting down and eating your creation and hopefully you have invited some friends or loved ones to share this unique experience with you.

Like the Massage training that Marloas underwent you can also take the recipe and knowledge of your newly acquired Thai culinary art back home with you as a very practical souvenir of your visit to Thailand. Surely that will add to the overall enjoyment of your holiday in “the land of smiles” [http://www.healthoasisresort.org]

Saftey Info on Thailand

The state department is concerned that there is an increased risk of terrorism in southeast Asia including in Thailand. Specific information exists for all countries and includes information on entry and exit requirements, currency regulations, health conditions, safety and security, crime, political disturbances. It contains new information under safety and security, terrorism, credit card fraud, property rental scams and health issues.
Pay close attention to your personal security at all times and monitor the media for information about possible new safety or security risks. Up-to-date information on safety and security can also be obtained by checking the internet.
Safety measures are rudimentary and ferries and speedboats do sink occasionally, so avoid overloaded ships in poor weather, and scope out the nearest life jackets when on board.  Ferries and speedboats used to transport tourists and local nationals to and from the many islands off the Thai mainland are often overcrowded and carry insufficient safety equipment.  Boat safety has become an increasing concern in Thailand.
For safety,  pedestrians should use overhead walkways whenever possible and should look carefully in both directions before crossing streets, even when using a marked crosswalk with a green walk light illuminated.  Bangkok also has an extensive bus system, but buses can be overcrowded, and are often driven with little or no regard for passenger safety.
Helmets are mandatory for motorcycle drivers and passengers, but many helmets do not meet international safety standards. The Thai law that safety helmets must be worn is widely ignored, a contributing factor in many tourist deaths each year. You should take the same safety precautions as in the UK.
With its wonderful nightlife and laid-back atmosphere, it is hard not to enjoy yourself in Thailand, and these safety tips should help you have a happy and healthy time on holiday.

Fun Above & Below The Waves At Koh Samui

The sea is great place to spend time enjoying the region's tropical beauty and marine life. Samui is becoming a water sports Mecca, with a range of options for those who want to get wet. The warm seas that surround Koh Samui have long played an integral role in the island's allure, with few visitors able to resist the temptation of the waters that gently lap Samui's beaches. Right now, there have never been so many ways for people to take a dip around Samui. Here are just a few of the most popular options for water babes who need an H2O fix during their time in paradise.
One of the most popular water sports worldwide is scuba diving and the Gulf of Thailand, with a rich diversity of marine life and favourable year-round conditions, is now firmly set as one of the world's premier dive holiday destinations. Whilst the teeming seas are an important part of the area's popularity, another key selling point is the huge variety of dive sites to visit. Koh Samui has it's own 'house' reefs that are suitable for novices, whilst more challenging dives await experienced divers at nearby Sail Rock or in the National Marine Park. For the clearest waters and most choice though, local dive operators also offer day trips to the stunning island of Koh Tao, where more than a dozen quality dive sites await discovery. Whether you're a hardened diver seeking some exciting dive experiences, or a nervous novice, keen to take your first breaths in this amazing environment, there is a diving option for everyone off Samui.
If going under the waves doesn't appeal, there are other ways to immerse yourself in to the deep blue world, the most popular of which is snorkeling. Many reefs lie directly off Samui and most visitors can't resist the urge to don a mask and snorkel and have a look at what lies beneath. As with diving, your snorkeling possibilities are by no means restricted to the immediate area. One of the more popular tours incorporating snorkeling is an adventure trip to the Ang Thong National Marine Park. This also includes a few hours kayaking amongst the park's striking collection of fifty limestone rock islands and formations, as well as a chance to see the 'golden bowl', a hidden lake that is completely encircled with majestic cliffs and was the inspiration behind Alex Garland's best selling novel: The Beach.
If it's the marine life you'd like to focus on then take a day tour to Koh Tao, where the clear waters and splendid array of shallow and bountiful reefs make for some of the best snorkelling anywhere in the world. Day trips also usually include a visit to famous Koh Nangyuan, an exquisite trio of verdant jungle islands connected by stunning, white sandbar beaches. Few visitors to Nangyuan are left disappointed and the views below the waters certainly match the breathtaking beauty above.
Back above the water, for more of an adrenaline rush, Koh Samui is now also home to one of the most exciting water sports of modern times: kiteboarding. Kiteboarding Asia is a company that has been on the island for five years and now also boasts three centers in Phuket, Hua Hin and Chumpon. Often called the new windsurfing, the sport also incorporates aspects of both wakeboarding and surfing to provide a truly thrilling experience.
These are the main but by no means the only seafaring options off Koh Samui, There are plenty of other water sports available such as jet skiing, taking a ride on a banana boat, hiring Kayaks to explore the beaches and rocky coves or renting Hobie cats and other craft for a spot of self-skippering. Add in other popular activities such as leisurely sunset dinner cruises, fishing trips that allow you to catch and barbecue your own supper, or perhaps even chartering a junk for a luxurious jaunt around the Thai Gulf and you'll soon find that it's possible to spend every day of your holiday either on, in or under the beautiful waters around Samui.

My Travel to Thailand - The Temple of the Emerald Buddha

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The Wat Phra Kaeo official name is Wat Phra Sri Rattana Satsadaram. The temple is located in the historic centre of the Bangkok. The district is named Phra Nakhon on Rattanakosin on the royal palace ground. The temple is considered to be Thailand's holiest shrine.
The build of the temple started in 1785 by king Rama 1. the capital of Siam moved from thonburi to Bangkok. No monks live in this temple as do in other temples. The temple of the Emerald Buddha is built along the same lines as the grand chapels from the Sukhothai and Ayutthaya eras.
The emerald Buddha image is 66cm tall, is made from jade and housed inside the temple. The image sits on top of a gilded ornate altar inside the royal chapel.
The image is usually dressed in different costumes based on the season. The image is dressed in jewels and a crown in the hot season, a golden shawl in winter and a gilt robe and headdress in the rainy season. Each time the costume of the emerald Buddha is changed the king presides over the ceremony.
The doors of the chapel have mother of pearl inlays showing scenes from the hindu epic Ramayana.
Inside the chapel the walls show murals of the Buddha's teaching and scenes from the jataka tales about Buddha's life.
When you visit the emerald Buddha you feel how important this statue is to Thailand. The Thai believe that when something happens to the emerald Buddha it is the end of Thailand. I must say I was very impressed. In my travels to Thailand I have seen many nice things and felt the warmth of the Thai people. I visited many temples. The one thing that impressed me the most is service of my local travel agent and my visit to the golden palace and the emerald Buddha. Your pictures will be of postcard quality. In fact I do not buy postcards, I print my picture and send them.
This is my first article and I will be writing more about my travels to Thailand.
If you want more advice, tips or information on the golden palace or the subject above please check out this website. http://www.thailandbestprice.com

One of Thailand's most beloved festivals, Loi Krathong is celebrated on the first full moon of the 12th lunar month. The grci-tong are origami-like vessels made from banana leaves, they’re decorated with flowers, and incense, candles and coins are placed in them. Tips For Travel

Image : http://www.flickr.com

When traveling out of the United States, it is important to be aware of some differences in that foreign country from culture in the United States. It is also important to be aware of some things about a foreign culture before traveling so as to lessen the culture shock that may occur. For example, in Brazil, it is important to keep any grocery or store bought items in paper sacks and any personal bags close to you for security. For this article, the tips will be focused on travel to Brazil. The tips listed include what to expect in the country and how to prepare for the vacation or business trip to the country:

1. The most important thing to know about Brazil is that it is very hot. No matter what time of year you go, it will always be very humid because it is considered a tropical climate since it is near the equator. Pack clothes accordingly and be ready to change if you get too hot walking around at night or during the day in the hot sun.

2. The second thing people usually want to know about is crime. Of course, in the big cities there will probably be pick-pickets, so it is important for people to keep their wallets out of their pockets and either in a money belt (clipped around the waist and under the clothes) or in a money pouch worn under the clothes, but around the neck. Also, it is always a good idea to be aware of your surroundings and do not go anywhere where there seem to be only a few people. Teenagers and young adults who are dependent on drugs get good money from drug dealers for stealing from tourists, so it is really best to stay on the main roads or near people, especially at night.

3. The language barrier in the big cities should not be too much of a problem. Most business people speak at least a little English, but when in doubt just point and most Brazilians will be eager to try to help you. It might be a good idea to know a few phrases in Brazilian Portuguese to show that you respect their language and that you are trying to speak in their native language. Doing this will get you much better service and usually a good reaction from people who are trying to help you.

4. As of now, the dollar is up on the Real by 2:1, so U.S. Dollars will take you a pretty long way in Brazil. It best to do any kind of money exchange at an actual bank, so you know they are credible. Also, people at a bank will usually be able to speak a little English and may be better able to help if you have any problems. Also, in Brazil, banks are usually the best place to get the best exchange rate, since they give very close to market value on the transaction.

Brazil is an excellent place for people to visit because it has the charm of both a tropical island feel (on the coast) as well as large city feel all in one. Following these tips and guidelines will help you make the most out of your trip to Brazil.

Thailand Travel - Four Tips on Thai Culture

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The way you present yourself while in Thailand is critical to how you will be viewed by Thai people, especially Thai Officials. There are Four Tips in presentation that the traveler to Thailand would do well to observe.
Many foreigners come from countries where the freedom to behave anyway they like is accepted. Any difficulties caused by the authorities are treated as intrusions, and responded to accordingly. Thai Government Officials have a much higher status than they do in countries like New Zealand, Australia, the USA, Canada, and the UK. It is important to understand this difference when dealing with them. Everyone, including the foreigners, benefit if foreigners show respect. The foreigner must understand that this is not an attack on their self esteem. It is not about freedom to express yourself or your rights, it is about giving face to people who are important within Thailand.
Often, foreigners' reference point for their behaviour is whether something similar would happen in their own countries. It is unwise to use this as a reference point in Thailand. It is a unique country with a highly developed culture of its own.
Here are Four Tips that will help you in Thailand:
Firstly, learn how to correctly wai Thai people. It is easy to learn the four basic wais. You will probably need only two of them. The wai is the joining of your palms together and the raising of your hands to different positions in front of your face. The fingers point up, with the thumbs closest to your head. When contacting Thai Officials it is best to wai by putting your fingers higher and close to your nose. You can also bend your head slightly. In Thailand, government officials have a high status, while businessmen have lower status unless they are very rich. Very highly placed government officials have a very, very high status, and you will probably not meet them. Your wai will usually be appreciated, and be to your benefit in doing what you have come to do. Also wai Thai Policemen in the same manner.
In restaurants, and with service people in Thailand the wai with the finger tips at the height of your chin is recommended. You wai could be higher, if you so chose. However, do not become 'wai-happy' which is wai-ing Thai people all the time. This will cause amusement than anything else. Wai-happiness is common when people come to Thailand for the first time.
Secondly, the clothes that you are wearing determine your rank or class in Thailand. A suit will mean that you are a professional, well off, and that you have status within your society, and in Thailand as well. If you wear a tee shirt, especially one with no sleeves, you will project a low status, and will generally be treated accordingly, unless perhaps, you speak Thai or you are at the beach. The tee shirt, sandals, and shorts look, popular with New Zealanders and Australians, classifies you as lower class or perhaps in a separate class as a foreigner.
I have a suit which I wear for any contact with Thai Officials. There is a big difference in the way I am treated by Thai people when I am wearing my suit. I have a friend, Malcolm, who has lived in Thailand, and is currently living in Australia. He will put on a tie and suit whenever he comes to, or leaves Thailand. He says it is important, and he is treated very well on flights, where he is sometimes upgraded.
Thirdly, do not get angry under any circumstances. Thai people are more relaxed and subscribe to the Buddhist Philosophy. Becoming angry will have no benefits for the foreigner. You will be considered a 'jai roon'; a person who can not control their emotions. Undeveloped emotionally. Thais value the quality of 'jai yen yen'; staying calm under pressure. There is a 'best way' if you become angry in Thailand. This is to relax your whole body and mind. Then smile sweetly, and calmly state your case if the person speaks English. Thai people has this 'jai yen yen' because in the Buddhist view of things, they believe that the problem they are confronted with, is probably not that important in the scheme of things... and they are probably right!
Fourthly, Thai people are very shy with foreigners if they don't speak English. This is especially the case outside Bangkok in places like Isaan. They will be interested in you because you are different but their shyness may prevent them from approaching you. It is very good to smile at people generally, and particularly if you see them everyday. An attempt to talk to them, even with only hand gestures is a good way to break the ice. If you smile, your smile will nearly always be returned. Thais are a truly warm people and they will eagerly help you to learn about their culture.
Thais have a great love of Sanuk, or fun. If you watch a few of the Thai Variety Shows on TV you will quickly appreciate the Thai love of humour and having fun. If you enter into the spirit of things in Thailand while observing these Four Tips discussed, you will have so much fun... you may never want to leave!

Health Oasis Resort, Koh Samui, A Better Place to Be

Koh Samui lies some fifty miles out in the Gulf of Thailand from the coastal town of Surat Thani. It’s on the small Thai island of Koh Samui that you will find “The Health Oasis Resort”. It is tucked away on the quiet north east coast, opening onto the idyllic Bang Po beach which affords a stunning view across to the neighbouring island of Koh Pha Ngan lying 20 kilometres to the north. The ‘Health Oasis’ comprises 36 bungalows, plus a two and three bedroom house. Some clustered around the swimming pool and none more than fifty metres from the sea. All rooms have fans and many have air conditioning. The proximity to the sea, however, ensures that the property enjoys cooling sea breezes the year round. The garden boasts frangipani and tall coconut palms, which gives it an authentic tropical paradise feel.
‘The Health Oasis’ came about as a result of a dream on the part of owner Manta Darnswat. This was to create an “informal and friendly environment free of stress for those who wanted to connect better with themselves and to grow healthier using the therapies and treatments promoted by Health Oasis.” The reverie became an actuality in December 1997 and “The Resort” will this year celebrate its tenth anniversary.
The place has a village feel. Although not luxurious it is comfortable and affordable prices and effectiveness of treatment make up any lack in the ‘opulence’ department. The residents forgather in the beachside vegetarian restaurant, where the Italian ‘chef-patron’ provides delicious vegetarian meals. The ‘Resort’ is small and everybody soon gets to know everybody else whether it is in the restaurant, beside the pool or on the adjacent beach and yet large enough to get lost in some of the nooks and crannies such as the library.
It offers many treatments as well as classes and trainings. The emphasis lies, however on de-tox. These ‘treatments and trainings’, include Thai massage and cookery, yoga, meditation, Reiki, EFT and Meridian Energy Techniques, hypnotherapy, nutrition ,diet and activities especially for children. Ss far as Koh Samui goes the ‘Health Oasis Resort’ is recognised as a traditional medicine hospital by the Thai Department of Health’. ‘De-tox’ and the popular candida cure are carried out by supervised colonic cleansing, weight loss and fasting. This programme under the direction of Australian naturopath Graham Rowe, undoes the damage of a stressed life style further exacerbated by poor eating habits and other toxins such as alcohol and smoking.
On arrival the guests are given a personal introduction to the ‘Resort’ and the facilities available as well as a thorough briefing on the details of the ‘de-tox programme’ they have embarked upon. There is a nine day, eight night programme and a shorter 4-day and three night version. There is menu of special herbs; supplements and juices as well as a daily yoga session in the attractive wooden ‘sala’ located feet away from the beach. Later in the day guests return to the same venue for a Thai massage that helps shed toxins and eases the strain of tired muscles. Later in the day the steam room opens and 'fasters' embrace another opportunity to rid themselves of even more poisons that have been allowed to build up as a result of lifestyle choices. The colonics take place in the privacy of your own room. Although they sound uncomfortable most visitors quickly accustom themselves to the effective procedure. Weight usually rolls away, the skin begins to glow with renewed good health and quickly a new energy catches up with the guest. I think it can be truly said that most residents are literally transformed after a few days.
The Resort boasts a team of professional therapists from around the world. The Manager, Graham advises on the programme as well as diet and nutrition. There is emotional back-up for those who want to shed emotional baggage or encounter difficulties during their fast on Koh Samui. All this and the setting itself make treatment at Healing Oasis much easier to undertake.
Of course you can simply visit the ‘Resort’ and forego all treatments if that is your wish. The accommodation beside the sea makes ‘Health Oasis’ a very nice place to stay in order to enjoy the beach, the swimming pool and Koh Samui itself. Vegetarians, too, are not always well catered for in traditional holiday venues. But here is a location where that is simply not the case. Whatever your choice ‘Health Oasis Resort’ on the fabled island of Koh Samui is somewhere to visit, be charmed by and return like so many guests year after year. [http://www.healthoasisresort.org]

When to go to thailand

The best time to visit most of Thailand is between November and February, because it rains the least and it is not too hot. This period is also Thailand’s main season for festivals, like Loi Krathong and Songkran.

lf you plan to focus on the northern provinces, the hot season (March to May) and early rainy season (lune to Iuly) are not bad either, as temperatures are moderate at higher elevations. Northeastern and central Thailand, on the other hand, are best avoided from March to May, when temperatures may climb over 40°C. Because temperatures are more even year-round in the south (because it’s closer to the equator), the beaches and islands of southern Thailand are a good choice for respite when the rest of Thailand is miserably hot.

Thailand’s peak tourist season runs from November to late March, with secondary peaks in luly and August. lf you want to avoid crowds and take advantage of discounted room rates, consider travelling during the least crowded months (typically April to lune, September and October).

Although the rainy season (roughly Iuly to October) gets a bad reputation, there are some bonuses: temperatures tend to be cooler, tourists are fewer and the landscape is lush and green. Depending on the region and the month, the rains might be hourong downpours in the afternoon. October, however, tends to be the wettest month.

Ang Thong Marine National Park Highlight

As an Australian travelling ,I had been a bit underwheimed by much-hyped beaches. But Aug Thong Marine National Park is as close to tropical paradise as I've ever seen - soft white sand. turqoise water, lush palm trees and all totally unspoilt. Not ever getting seasick and being dramatically ill on a pristine stretch of beach could ruin it for me.

Bangkok Highlight

There is weeken Market (jatujuk Market)he Market you'll find something that you do not know what you want or need. They come in all sizes and colors.

Tom Yam Highlight

My personal mission in Bangkok was to seek out the base Tom Yom This ivolved tireless research, which at one point meant three serves of the delightful concoction in one day! The winner? A tuk-tuk driver recommended ad family run eatery across from Hualamphong station.Kaffir lime, lemon grass, tamarind, mushrooms, spring onion, galangal, ginger and bok choy..yum!

Thailand Tourism

At least until recently, tourism has been the third most important sector of Thailand's economy, after agriculture and exports. Among 'industries,' tourism is listed in first place. The country is without doubt one of the world's favorite tourist destinations, in part because of its magnificent natural beauty (of many varieties, not just the famous islands), in part because of the natural friendliness of its people, in further part because of the relative ease and safety of traveling in Thailand, which is easily done on both high and low traveler personal economies.
This situation is now in considerable flux, and concerns about the viability of Thailand's major tourist industry are growing. Currency fluctuations and new economic policies have put a significant dent in exports as a source of GDP, and increasingly severe and unpredictable weather - primarily floods and droughts - throughout the country are an increasing concern to its agriculturalists.
Those changes make the viability of Thailand's tourist industry all the more important. While the country has so far survived threats to the industry such as SARS, bird flu, and the 2004 tsunami relatively intact, tourism officials and operators are only too aware that a more large-scale bird flu epidemic or another tsunami (in a region where earthquakes in Indonesia such as the one that caused the one in 2004 are increasingly frequent) could have a devastating effect on the industry.
Additionally, the relocating of the country's main airport, an expansive new facility called Suvarnaphumi planned by former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to make Bangkok the 'hub of Southeast Asian travel' has been a only slightly mitigated disaster for the country and the source of considerable national shame. Hurried construction, corrupt construction practices, and overall bad planning have yielded a facility many find far inferior to the 95-year-old 'old' airport in Don Muang, for which longtime Thailand visitors had developed an affection, and which worked with seasoned efficiency. The new airport is daily news nationally, with alternating reports about its safety (primarily of the runways) and inconvenience. It is much farther out of the city, making it much more difficult for tourists to get to their Bangkok destinations and to others on their travel itineraries.
There are great fears among observers of Thailand's tourist scene that it will take just one more major problem such as the ones described above to drive tourists to seek other travel destinations in Asia and elsewhere. The effects on Thailand's economy would be devastating if tourism were to drop even a small amount.

Budget Travel In Thailand: How to Travel in Thailand With Style and Without Bankruptcy

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Thailand was my first tourist destination outside Europe and North America. Based on the sage advice of my Thailand-experienced friends, I was sure that this paradise vacation would be carried out on ridiculous costs. However, back home, I have found out too late, that during my little Thailand adventure I have spent almost the same amount of money as one of my regular surges to Europe. If only I knew that carefully planning your trip to Thailand can manifest itself in huge savings. The following list includes some solid advice that can help those novice Thailand visitors to save significant amounts of cash and still enjoy their vacation:
1. Season choice. Traveling in Thailand Islands during the low season can save you up to 25% of the accommodation costs (up to 25$ per bungalow per night if you choose high standard - not luxury - accommodation). Similar to many other world locations that are based operate seasonally; there is a significant price fluctuation across seasons. Not less important is that fact that the weather in Thailand is quite pleasant even during the low season. The temperatures' difference between the "hot season" and the "peak season" is miniscule, and during the "wet season" one can experience only a mild occasional rain. Therefore, in Thailand one can lower accommodation costs by avoiding the peak season without paying the price of suffering from unbearable cold or coping with endless monsoon.

2. Transportation. Getting from Bangkok to your final destination in one of the Southern Islands by train or bus instead of by plane can save you up to 80$ each way. You can save a bundle if you arrive to Bangkok International Airport in the evening. In this case you save, besides the gap between relatively expensive airfare and train or bus ticket, the first night's accommodation cost as well (40$ - 100$ per bungalow per night in high standard - not luxury - accommodation).

3. Food. In Western style countries, the more you pay for your dinner the better it is, so everyone can make a personal decision about getting an appropriate cost - benefit balance. In Thailand, and especially in the Southern Islands it is much simpler: in most cases, the cheaper the better. Expensive restaurants in Thailand Islands usually specialize on Western food that is neither authentic nor of superior taste; a standard dinner will cost you 10$ - 30$ in a restaurant of this kind. Alternatively, the dinner in a cheap restaurant with plastic chairs will cost you 3$ - 8$ and it is usually both tasty and authentic. My most disappointing Thai dinner was served in a fancy restaurant in Bangkok and had cost 120$ for a couple, whereas my best dinner was served in a cheap family restaurant in Koh Phangan. The owner - young mom named Mam - prepared the meal for us exactly as we wished it would be and charged us with measly 5-6$ per person.

Thailand Internet is Unsatisfactory

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Internet in Thailand can only be described as unsatisfactory, at least from my experience. I have spent a lot of time in Thailand over the last couple of years and I have had some dreadful experiences using the internet. However, the experiences are my own and do not necessarily apply to the whole of Thailand but just the places that I have been.

The first internet problem I had was that my credit card details were taken probably in a Bangkok internet cafe with logging hardware that recorded all my keystrokes. I tried to pay my dental bill and the card did not work. It transpired that the details had been stolen and that goods had been billed to the card in London, England. But the credit card company said that the details were stolen in Thailand (the only place I had used it).

This theft of credit card details is not a comment on the quality of Thai internet but just some back ground information which may be of interest to the reader. Never enter your password or username for your bank details in an internet cafe in Thailand. The key logger technology can be either hardware or software, and is very easy to install or attach. It is very hard to discover as well.

I stayed in Nakhon Nayok for a period of a few weeks with my Thai girlfriend last year and something happened to a cable and the whole town was without any LAN internet for six - yes six! - days. Now in my country if that happened there would be a revolution but in Thailand it did not seem to be much of a worry to the locals. All four of the town's internet cafes were shut down for most of this period.

In Bangkok, there are constant and unending problems using the internet. For example, in my apartment there is internet provided. But it is often very slow, or not working. In fact, I have had tests run outside Thailand and one of the problems is that my Thai computer which I use in the apartment in Bangkok is cycling through IP (internet protocol) addresses; as many as 25 in a day. This IP problem means that I can not access certain sites that I need to go to.

A recent experience in a Koh Samet Resort left us with no wifi internet for two of the three days that we were there. Usernames, passwords, and nothing else worked until the day before we were due to leave. We had to pay two baht per minute outside the resort for access.

Another problem is the continual slowness of some websites to load. I often just have to give up and do something else. Sometimes I have to go to wifi cafes or LAN internet cafes but the problem of slowness continues in those as well.

I have heard it said that the internet is Thailand is watched closely by government agencies, and they certainly do block websites that are deemed by them to be immoral. I know this because they put a Thai Police re-direct statement on the objectionable home pages. However, I have no evidence of any other interference.

My point is that internet in Thailand, by my experience, is unreliable, and often slow. On a recent trip to Vietnam I had no problems with internet at all in the three or so weeks that I was there. Makes one think, doesn't it!

Thailand Travel

The art, sculptures, and architecture is amazing in any region of Thailand. If you are planning to travel to Thailand you may be excited to see all the cultural and religious art that seems to be everywhere you turn. There are so many places to see artifacts it's unreal.
The Wat Phra Borommahathat Doi Suthep is one of those places you just have to see to believe. It was built in 1383 by King Gue-Na on a plateau. The view is out of this world and shows you Thailand's northern capital Chiang Mai. The temple contains a pagoda that holds part of the holy relics of the Lord Buddha. Buddhists from all over the globe flock here to pay worship to the holy temple.
The Monkeys Temple in Lopburi, called San Phra Kan, is a shrine lying with two sections. The older section dates back to the Khmer period while the new section is a building made in 1951. The new section has a four armed deity figure with a Buddha's head, which is a project of worship. Actual monkeys are on and in the temple, and are a favorite of tourists. The monkeys are tame and eat the food offerings left by the worshipers.
The Wat Chao Phraya Thai is just a few minutes outside of Ayutthaya, and another great sight to see. King U-Thong built it in 1357 for meditation. There is a massive pagoda, which was constructed in 1792 that can be seen very far away. Unfortunately the pagoda is in a ruinous state at the present, but it's still a great place to visit.
Phanom Rung Historical Park in Buriram is the place to go to see some interesting 12th century stone art. There is a great stone hall of the castle you should not miss. There are also many lintels and pediments depicting episodes from Indian texts such as the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and the Puranas.
Thailand has a lot to offer, especially when considering the areas massive collection of ancient and religious art. From architecture to sculptures, it is a sight to behold.

The Other Side Of The (Full) Moon Highlight

This Hightlight is Kho Tao May be considered the hidden gem of Thailand's islands (particularly if you're into diving),but the quieter side of Koh Pha-Ngan is well worth exploring.if you left you glow sticks at home and would rather have your mushrooms in an omelette, seek out a beachside view from a hammock on the island's calmer east coast. Sometimes a Full Moon is best appreciated on an empty stretchof beach.

Mae Hong Son Highlight

Most vistors return south after a stay in Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai,but if you're going between November and January,Mae Hong Son is a must,Perched on the hills north of Chiang Mai,this province, lost in the clouds,is the stuff dreams are made of.

Sukhothai Highlight

It’s the ruins of a once-great ancient city, reclaimed by deep Southeast Asian jungle, rediscovered in the modern era and transformed into a historical park. Angkor Wat? Good call-but incorrect. This is Thailland’s Sukhothai ,the ancient walled one-time capital of the kingdom of the same name,Though not as grandiose as Angkor Wat,sukhothai offers nearly 200 ruins filled with devotional art, sculpture and carvings sprawled out over 70 sqkm of jungle. But being subdued isn’t necessarily a bad thing. While Angkor Wat is thronged with tourists nearly 365 days a year, sukothai is still a mere blip on the Southeat Asia travel map;on some day,it’ll be just you and the ghosts of the ancients.
